BEHIND TEACHING STRATEGIES
Teachers Teaching Guidebook
The Heart of Inclusive Education in Every Classroom
What happens when teachers use effective teaching strategies, prepare excellent lessons, and manage their classrooms well, yet some students continue to struggle, lose motivation, or disengage from learning? The answer may lie beyond the lesson plan—in the emotional experiences, personal challenges, and individual needs of the learners themselves.
Behind Teaching Strategies is an educational guidebook designed to help teachers, inclusive education teachers, school leaders, counselors, parents, and other educational stakeholders understand the deeper human realities behind teaching and learning. It explores the idea that successful education requires more than delivering lessons, completing the syllabus, or improving academic performance. It requires understanding the child behind the behavior.
Students enter classrooms carrying different experiences, abilities, emotions, and challenges. Some may struggle with disabilities, learning difficulties, bullying, family conflict, poverty, trauma, anxiety, grief, or low self-esteem. Behaviors that appear to be laziness, disobedience, or a lack of interest may sometimes reflect deeper needs that have not yet been understood. This book encourages educators to look beyond assumptions, labels, and punishment and respond with empathy, patience, attentive listening, and appropriate support.
Through its practical themes, Behind Teaching Strategies explores the inclusive teacher's mindset, relationship-building, respectful communication, emotional self-control, differentiated teaching, observation skills, student dignity, confidentiality, and partnerships with families and communities. It also recognizes the dedication, resilience, and emotional demands experienced by teachers who work tirelessly to ensure that every learner has an opportunity to succeed.
Most importantly, this guidebook reminds readers that inclusive education is not simply about placing students with diverse abilities in the same classroom. It is about creating a safe, respectful, supportive, and welcoming environment where every child feels valued, understood, heard, and capable of growth.
Written by Ratu Meli Qiokata, founder of Fiji’s Teen Hub, this book invites educators to reflect on their professional practice and rediscover the heart of teaching: understanding the person before teaching the subject. Because teaching strategies matter, but human connection matters too. Before meaningful learning can take place, every student must first believe that they matter.
